- Hazard earns biggest sports victory since Bulldogs won “Sweet
16” State Basketball Championship in 1955. Hazard upsets Mayfield 24-6 to
capture the Class A Football State Championship at WKU. The Bulldog defense was
stout and held Mayfield to 26 total rushing yards for the game while forcing
five turnovers. Senior Zack Blanton carries the ball 25 times for 67 yards and
tosses a 28-yard touchdown pass to Austin Johnson. Evan Whitaker adds to the
Bulldog scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run. Senior linebacker B.J. Combs, who
returned an interception for a score, said after the game, it was “amazing to
be the first Hazard football team to win the state. It will be with me the rest
of my life and all us seniors will be together forever.”
